Sesmic Belt

Q:- Places on Earth which have equal sensation of earthquake are called?

-> Seismic belts..

Seismic Belts are defined as one of the broad, more or less well-defined, elongated zones in which most earthquakes originate.

The outermost layer of the Earth (lithosphere) is made up of several large tectonic plates. The edges where these plates move against one another are the location of interplate earthquakes that produce the seismic belts.

An area where large numbers of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean is named Ring of Fire. In a 40,000 km horseshoe shape, it is associated with a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenc
hes, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts or plate movements. It covers the Circum Pacific belt which covers the Pacific Ocean and Alpide Belt, which stretches from the Azores through the Mediterranean and Middle East to the Himalayas and Indonesia, where it joins the Circum-Pacific Belt.

About 90% of the world's earthquakes and 80% of the world's largest earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire.

When and where a earthquake is going to strike no one can predict. But despite of this there are some safety measures that should be taken during an earthquake..

  1. Take cover under a sturdy desk, table or other furniture. Hold the position until the ground stop shaking, or if you want to move than prepare to move with it.
  2. Do not rush to the doors and try to exit through the lift. Keep away from windows,mirrors, chimneys and mirrors.If possible then protect yourself by taking the corner of a room.
  3. If you are outside then get into the open and away from the power lines and buildings and specially the old ones.
  4. If you are driving, stop if it is safe, but stay inside your car. Stay away from bridges, flyovers and tunnels. Move your car away from the normal traffic pattern, as far as possible and park it on the roadside. Avoid stopping under trees, light posts or power lines.
  5. If you are in a hilly area, or near unstable slopes or cliffs, be alert for falling rocks and other debris, which could be loosened by the earthquake.
The things you should not do after the earthquake:-

  1. Do not panic.
  2. Do not spread and believe in rumours.
  3. Do not use candles, matches, etc and do not switch on any electric mains immediately after an earthquake.
