Women on Everest

Q:- Who was the first women to climb Mount Everest?

-> Junko Tabei

Junko Tabei was born in Japan. She became the first woman to reach the summit of Everest on 16 May 1975 via the South-East Ridge route. Junko was born Fukushima JAPAN – 23 May 1939. In just 10 years of age she climbed Mt. Nasu with a teacher. This experience changed her life forever and she was more attracted in mountain climbing. She formed a women's mountain climbing club; "Ladies Climbing Club: Japan (LCC)" in 1969. She also enjoyed mountain climbing with her husband; they climbed Mt. Fuji and some of, the highest mountains in Japan.

When she heard about a Japanese newspaper and TV company looking for women to form an Everest expedition, she wasted no time in applying. Hundreds of women applied and only 15 were chosen. Junko was chosen to lead the expedition. She was 32 and had just given birth to her daughter when training for the climb began.

As an adult, she only grew to a height of 4 feet 9 inches, but Tabei has proved herself to be a world class high altitude climber.

When asked what she deemed the most important tool required reaching the summit?

She replied: "Technique and ability alone do not get you to the top--it is the willpower that is the most important. This willpower you cannot buy with money or be given by others--it rises from your heart."
